Useful Hints page.

This page is meant to be a help for people to either prevent damage, or to repair damage on comics.

TIP 1. As you can see the picture to the right has damage. This was caused by the Free Gift Splat Balls being taken off the front cover with the help of an iron.

Normally this process would be great, but on this occasion the steam setting on the iron was left to ON. The water vapour from the iron has crinkled the cover in such a way that the paper has warped. One suggestion is to try straighten the paper by using a DRY iron, hopefully helping to remedy the situation.

With all sellotaped Free Gift/Give-a-ways, these can hopefully be removed easily by the use of a DRY iron, and BROWN paper. Place the brown paper on the sellotape and simply iron. The heat of the iron should hopefully melt the glue on the tape thus allowing the Free Gift to be dispatched.

TIP 2. Never Use sellotape or any other tape to stick up tears and rips in comics, this devalues the comic and a collector would rather a torn copy, than a poorly repaired one.

These tears and rips can easily be repaired with the use of a little PVA glue and some rice paper. The PVA glue goes clear and the rice paper forms a structural seal for the glue and hopefully holds the pages together.

Make sure the pages are separated when doing this and the page is dry before putting back together.

TIP 3. Never Cut the edge of a comic with scissors. This renders the comic almost worthless. Send the comic to a reputable repairer of comics. Of course this depends on the rarity and value of the comic. The names of several companies dealing with such repairs can be sorced on the Web.

TIP4. As with the second picture, never stick adhesive stickers directly on to the item itself. The picture shown actually has a polyphene membrane covering it, keeping out the weather, cold and  insects, never write directly on the sticker once it is affixed to the item, if pressing too hard the item will either rip or mark.

TIP5.

How to restore an old annual when capable!

Step 1

Gently wipe of any dust from the comic cover and pages with a soft dry cloth. Use a soft brsh for any hard to remove debris.

Step 2

Examine the anual fr ters, holes, rusty staples and smudges. Determine what repirs need to be made.

Step 3

Remove any rusty or damaged staples with a staple remover or straight pin. Be careful not to tear or rip connecting pages.

Step 4

Carefully restaple the necessary pages to replace the missing staples.

Step 5

Gently remove any smudges white a clean white eraser, putty rubber, brush away the eraser swarf.

Step 6

To repair tears or holes, use rice paper. Use scissors to cut a pece of rice paper tht is about 1/8 inch larger than the damaged area. For holes, you ned the rice paper piece to be able to fold overthe page.

Step 7

Aply a small amount of acid-free glue to the rice paper. For holes, pick up the rice paper with tweezers and gently press the first rice pper piec over the hole. Place wax paper over the rice to keep glue from sticking to oposite pages and then turn the page. Place the second piece of rice paper on the other side of the hole. Use your finger to smooth any wrinkles. For tears, pick up the rice paper with tweezers and carefully fld the rice pper over  The tear. Use your finger to smooth any wrinkle again.

Step 8

Always cover the rice paper with wax paper before you turn the page to keep individual pages from sticking together!

Step 9

When all pages are fixed, close the anual and cover it with a heavy book to keep pages smooth while the glue dries.
